Pipe weight calculator: outside diameter, wall and length
Calculate hollow round pipe mass from outside diameter, wall thickness, length and density. Exclude the bore and distinguish actual outside diameter from nominal pipe size.
Hollow circular tube formula
Inner diameter d = outside diameter D − 2 × wall thickness t. Material volume = π/4 × (D² − d²) × length. Multiply by density to calculate mass; do not calculate a hollow tube as a solid cylinder.
Use actual dimensions rather than nominal size
Enter the actual outside diameter in mm, not a DN or nominal bore label. Wall thickness must be positive and less than half the outside diameter. Schedules, weld seams, corrosion and manufacturing tolerances can change actual dimensions.
Material volume is not internal capacity
The reported m³ below measures the pipe wall material. Internal capacity would use the inner-diameter cylinder instead. This model excludes end caps, elbows, threads, fluid, insulation and coatings and does not establish pressure rating or load capacity.
Dimensions and theoretical material weight
Uses ideal geometry. Density is editable and dimensions are in mm; results are neither manufacturer weighings nor structural checks.
Worked default example
Outside diameter 20 mm, wall 1 mm, length 1000 mm, density 7.85 g/cm³: inner diameter 18 mm; material volume = π/4 × (20² − 18²) × 1000 mm³. Result: 0.469 kg.
Reference nominal densities, not grade certification
| Material | g/cm³ | kg/m³ |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon steel | 7.85 g/cm³ | 7,850 kg/m³ |
| 304 stainless steel | 7.93 g/cm³ | 7,930 kg/m³ |
| 6061 aluminium | 2.7 g/cm³ | 2,700 kg/m³ |
| Copper | 8.96 g/cm³ | 8,960 kg/m³ |
